Studio Art: Acrylic Painting

Peer Assessment (Katya):
Creativity
- shows the scenery and activity of the situation (playing cards and the interim location)
- analogous colors in the background, especially the sky and the wooden railing

Manipulation of Materials
- controlled brushstrokes
- detail and shape into simple objects
- cards are not just white, shows the shadows with the tones of grey

Presentation and Quality
- multiple layers enhances the entire piece
- different colors and tones in the wood defined it
- subtly outlined the cards to show where the light hits the edges

Problem Solving
- (had a problem with the painting of the hand when working)
- executed well: different tones and shapes
- line quality is good when you used the brown to show the shadows and edges

Figure Drawing: Pencil and Oil Pastel

Areas of Growth
Pencil:
  • I need to improve the thick, thin, light, and dark differences in lines
  • Add more detail for the composition (people, objects, etc.)
  • Add more contour lines to show more shadows
Oil Pastel:
  • Add more light and dark contrast by adding more whites
  • Add more shadows and details
  • Improve on time management for better composition

Oil Pastel Composition

Group Critique

Megan C.

  • Good job on perspective (pointing downwards, realistic)
  • Crates are very realistic, shadow
  • different shades of green
  • perspective of the letters on the can

Joanna E.

  • little details on the can (labels,
  • different lines of green on all of the cans
  • problem solving - doing lines instead of the words so the label can be included

Julia H.

  • very neat, details inside the crate (shadow)
  • between
  • clean tiles and neatly separated
  • end of door setting makes the piece more like an actual place
Self Assessment

Creativity – B+
I gave myself this grade because I think that no one else this year used objects from Mr. Ho's kitchen. If I had more time, I would like to walk around the school more since I'm sure that there are plenty of other unique places to visit.

Manipulation – A
I gave myself this grade because I thought that I put in my best effort to make the final piece look detailed and realistic. By using different shades of a certain color with white, I added in shadows that made the final result look 3D.

Presentation – A
I gave myself this grade because even though I had difficulties creating this composition, it ended up being a lot better than I expected, and the contrast of the colors compliments each other.

Problem Solving – B+
I gave myself this grade because even though I fixed most of the problems (e.g. putting in shades of green on the can to make it more realistic), I still think that I can make it look better and neater if I had known what looked best from the start.

If I could do it again...I would add a more complex background.

Studio Art: Charcoal Still Life

Group Critique:

Creativity
Claire: Good- white didn't ruin the image, and contrast from black to grey
Megan: Good- two glasses on top of each other, contrast between the two different glasses

Manipulation:
Claire: good control for drawing shapes (clear)
Megan: Showed the contrast (different shades of grey next to each other), showing clear shadows)

Presentation and Quality:
Claire: Good- Left a lot of shadows, didn't erase all of the background
Megan: Zoomed in to the objects fill out the negative space

Problem Solving:
Claire: understand how to use the charcoal properly (different shades with the same charcoal)
Megan: Figured out how to eliminate the blank spaces (zoomed in), understand how to use the charcoal
