Kandinsky Water Color Painting reflection

Who was Wassily Kandinsky?

Wassily Kandinsky, born on December 16th, 1866, was an influential Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky wasn't just your average painter out there to perform one style of art. Through his paintings he constantly pioneered new ideas on the way art could be done; as you may know he was one of the first abstract artists and experimented with color and form more than any of his peers.

What is the title of the song you chose? Who is the artist and why did you choose this song?

The title of my song that I chose was 'Hey Jude' by The Beatles. I chose this song because when I heard it in class, I really enjoyed listening to the tune because it actually made me want to draw the lyrics and melody down on paper. Some shapes in my final draft were sharp and some were wavier. The music made me draw this way because of the variety of tunes in the song. If you listen to it, you can hear that the song starts off with a slow pace and melody, but as you keep listening there are some parts of the song where the beat starts to pick up. Click here to listen!

How does your artwork represent the piece of music you chose? Explain your use of colour line rhythm and shape.

First, with the background, I decided to make it yellow because in the title (Hey Jude), the word "Hey", makes me think of the sun, or cheerfulness. The shades of blue in my artwork, especially in the triangles on the left side, is the color that I think of when I hear "Jude". Jude, reminds me of June, and the word makes me think of the color blue, mostly because June reminds me of summer. The other patterns, such as waves, circles, lines, and more, are the type of feeling the song gives me during different parts. The waves and circles mostly represents the soft, smooth tunes in the song, and the sharp squares and lines represents the part where the song starts to pick up its beat. For layering and darkening the tones of the color in different shapes of the artwork, it mostly came from the feel the song gave me. I didn't focus on the lyrics, and instead I focused on the tune of the song and what colors I think of when I listen to it.

What do you think of abstract art?

I think that abstract art is a unique type of art where artists can express themselves through their own imagination of shapes, lines, colors, and more. The best part about it for me is how sometimes, it doesn't make sense to everyone else, but it makes sense to the artist, especially since you can take a simple shape, and make a connotative meaning to it. It's really interesting how each different art piece has its own deeper meaning, and how sometimes, different people don't always have the same way of interpreting the art work.

Explain the rationale for “Space and Section” of your structure.  How will your structure function? Where would be the best place for your structure?
My group and I decided to design a house that we would all want to live in with our chosen environments. To do this, we had to make sure that the spacing of our design is comfortable if it was an actual house. We also had to make sure the sections of each part of the house made sense to living conditions. For example, we made sure that all the bedrooms are at least bigger than other rooms such as the kitchen or the dining room because generally, people like to have bigger bedrooms. For sections, we tried our best to make them convenient. For example, we made sure that the dining room is next to the kitchen to make it easier if we were to live there.

In what way did you incorporate “Surface” into your design?  Comment on what type of Surfaces you chose (Curved, Textured, Smooth, other…) and why you chose these surfaces.
My group and I wanted to give people the impression that our building is meant to be designed for the modern day. Because squares, rectangles and simpler designs are mostly the common design for modern houses, we tried our best to create the building with smooth squares and rectangles. For example, we made the building itself a 4 floors of the same rectangle shape with a smooth surface to create a simple construction.

How did “Mass and Density” affect your design?  How will people live, dwell or function in your structure?  How many People?
We tried our best to build a comfortable and stable building that will suit people's daily lifestyle. To create a more interesting and appealing building, we decided to arrange and stack the buildings slightly off from each floor. We made sure that the building was stable by making sure each floor was the same size, and not too far apart from each other so it wouldn't fall or break. We also thought about real-life sizes, and put doors, windows, walls, stairs, elevators, etc into consideration. I think that a family with many kids could live in this structure.

Summative Critique question- How well did you do?  Which two Architectural concepts did you apply the best to your structure?
I think that my group and I worked well together into making a good house design. In my opinion, the building itself lacked a little bit of creativity, but we constructed it anyways because when we thought of what it would have looked like in reality, we thought that it would've been a really beautiful structure and we would love to live in a house like that. I think that the two best architectural concepts that we applied to our structure was space and section, and mass and density.

1. Which is your favourite architectural structure in Singapore, and explain why?
The Interlace, which is a condominium in Singapore, is one of my favourite architectural structures in Singapore because of how the design interests me in various ways. One of the reasons why I chose this building to answer this question is because of how this structure reminded me of our design and how similar they both are.

2. Who is Frank Lloyd Wright? Name two things he is famous for.  Provide images of his work.  Do you like his work?
Frank Lloyd Wright is from Wisconsin, was born in 1867 and died in 1959. He was a famous architect and interior designer. Overall, he designed over 1000 structures, and some of his famous structures are the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Falling Water structure. I like his work because it's very unique and different from other types of buildings. In the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, his design of the twisting halls is simple and spectacular at the same time. I also really like the Falling Water structure as it gives people a spectacular impression of how beautiful the structure is. Frank Lloyd Wright does an amazing job taking the setting in and adapting his work to fit with it.

3. If you were to do this assignment again what would you do differently?
If I were to do this assignment again, I would put in more consideration of the design of the building itself. If I could have, I want to create and come up with a more creative design. Maybe, I might add in more architectural concepts such as module and repetition or surface by adding concave or convex designs. I would also like to try using the different lego pieces since most of the time, I only used basic shapes like rectangles and squares to construct the building.

Art Photo Essay

Editing Pictures:

Reflection:
1. What is a Photo Journalist?
A photo journalist is someone similar to a journalist, but instead of expressing his/her thoughts with words, he/she expresses them through pictures. As a journalist, you still collect, edit and present a story for publication, but photo journalism is when all the pictures together is then able to tell a story. When I think about it, I see each picture as a chapter, and like people usually say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

2. If you could do one category (people, place, objects, macro) of your essay again which one would you re-do and why?
If I could re-do one category for my essay, I would choose Place because I personally think that I didn't do so well for that particular part. Place was the hardest for me to take pictures of since I was mainly taking pictures only on school grounds, and I couldn't really think of a place that really meant something important to me.

3. To what degree does your final Photo Essay convey or capture your Middle School experience, memories, or story?
My final Photo Essay isn't really about the special things in my Middle School experience, but instead it's about what I do, see, and have almost everyday. For example, I put a macro picture of my water bottle not because it was important to me, but because I bring it to school everyday and I can't remember a day when I didn't have it with me. Another example are the clocks the school have in every classroom. I decided to put it in my photo essay because there were so many countless times that I've looked at the clock during class to see when it'll finally end.

Shoe Drawing Reflection

If I could do this assignment again I would improve:

I would improve on shading the background shadows of my shoe drawing. It was the most difficult part for me to do because I couldn't balance out the pencil to have the same value, and it was harder to shade on a wide, empty area of the paper.

Why is contrast important in pencil drawing?

Contrast is an important element of pencil drawing, because it shows the differentiation between the different level of values the picture contains. A good knowledge of contrast in drawing helps us significantly because it shows that we have learnt the difference of light and dark values.

Portfolio Name Reflection

1. What was the best part of this assignment?

The best part of this assignment was the freedom I got on what I want to do with my portfolio. There weren't any specific rules on shapes, color, design, etc., I had the opportunity to do what we wanted and we had the freedom to use any kind of materials we prefer.

2. If you could do this assignment again, what would you do differently?

If I could do this assignment again, I think I would and should have painted the background first instead of leaving it as the last part. If I had done it first, then I wouldn't have to spend a lot of time trying to go around the foreground to make sure I don't mess it up.

DCA

1. Respect and Protect Yourself
2. Respect and Protect Others
3. Respect and Protect Intellectual Property
4. Respect and Protect Property
5. Why is DCA important? Why do schools have these agreements?

The DCA is important because it helps to prevent cyber-bullying. It also helps to stop the illegal spread of copyrighted material.

Schools have these agreements because they want to provide good and safe learning environments for all the students at their school.
